PASTORAL COUNSELING & COACHING: Compass Therapy In Churches
eBook (PDF), 256 Pages
This exceptionally practical book shows pastors and Christian therapists reliable ways to help individuals who are challenged by a wide range of issues. Through diagrams and dialogue, the reader moves directly into the Compass Therapy approach to pastoral counseling, whether this takes the form of brief situational coaching, short-term counseling, or long-term pastoral psychotherapy. Dan Montgomery's well-established Compass Model integrates psychology and theology, while demonstrating with lively case studies the beautiful potential for healing available in the pastor and care-seeker relationship. Praised by professors at Yale, Princeton, Fuller, Gordon-Conwell, Dallas, and Bangor theological seminaries, as well as Loyola, Oral Roberts, and Southwestern Assemblies of God universities. A vital addition to the library of pastors, students, and Christian counselors.

Jan 7, 2010This book meets a global need for competent counseling in churches and Christian counseling ministries. Whether the reader is a pastor or a licensed therapist, the Compass Therapy Model expands knowledge about personality, human nature, and techniques for healing and helping across a broad range of needs. I felt secure in Dan Montgomery's veteran hands. His thirty years of experience as a psychologist and pastoral counselor gives the book a conversational tone, even though a considerable amount of theory and practice is covered. The practical topics are very helpful, like how to: handle a first contact, address confidential phone calls and email, structure a first session, work with a person's whole human nature, deepen emotional rapport, apply healing techniques, implement prayer during sessions, and bring counseling to a close, as well as communicate one's pastoral counseling role to church and community. This book will become a classic in the field!
Jan 6, 2010This is a very practical book for pastors who need to find effective ways to help those in the congregation who are struggling with a variety of issues. As usual, with books in the ‘Compass’ series, the work is consistent with biblical truth as the foundation for pastoral intervention. A useful addition to the working library of pastor and seminarian.
Dec 5, 2009The Compass Model for pastoral counseling makes a very important statement about how the Christian faith and psychology can work together to bring God's healing into congregational life. The case studies are excellent. Montgomery uses a wide range of techniques including role-playing and imaging, which are helpful and empowering to persons.
