I have to admit I wasn't sure what to expect when I read these two chapters. I deal with diversity from the UK angle and work in the Hate Crime arena from a UK police perspective. This understanding of Cultural Diversity is very much from the USA perspective but this is not necessarily a bad thing. What I read I found extremely interesting and thought provoking especially when Dr Parvis pointed out that the 9/11 disaster was a Hate Crime on a huge scale, something that a lot of people even now haven't quite grasped. I think this book will be worth reading in full. I intend to purchase it and use it to add to my knowledge base.

This two chapter sample of Dr. Parvis' text on Understanding Cultural Diversity created a desire in me to want to purchace the full text. It was easy to comprehend, and applicable to both professional and personal life. Definitions were laid out in a way that not only defined, but explained and provided relevent examples. Dr. Parvis' "Test Your Knowledge" sections at the end of the chapter allow the reader to determine how much they have learned, as well as further enmesh the information read. There are only a couple of critiques I would like to see in a revision of Dr. Parvis' text. Though used occasionally, I would like to see more sources to support some of the statements and definitions made. I have no doubt that they are true, however it is important to have sources to back up one's claims. Dr. Parvis' text, in some sections, leans on subjectivity. This can be easily revised in simply stating that these are his opinions, and not objective. I do however, agree with all... More > of his subjctive statements. With these revisions, I believe Dr. Parvis' text would make a useful text for professionals of all fields, students, and anyone who wishes to deal with anyone human. The beauty of the human race is that we are all unique, and yet similar. Appreciating this concept is essential to working with others. --Master's in Clinical Psychology Student< Less
