"A powerful book that forces the reader to take a step back to the self" Daniel’s “A Civilised Mind?” reads like romantic philosophy. Thought provoking and inspiring, I found myself thinking about his theories between readings. What I found most interesting was Section Two where Daniel asserts that we cannot influence another individual. That individual’s self will never change, only their condition; that we are all sublimely unique and that abhorring this uniqueness adversely influences civilization. Daniel takes us on an expedition to the beginnings of society with his beautifully articulated language: “Different is not always truth and different is not always an improvement.” A powerful and truly inspiring conclusion, but I don’t want to spoil.
