Pipher makes the case for the proposition that we are living in an evolving, less nurturing society. In this society, we are woefully inadequate and unprepared to address the specific issues adolescent girls (exclusively) must confront. I do not take issue with the notion that “...adolescence is when girls experience social pressure to put aside their authentic selves and to display only a small portion of their gifts” (Pipher P22) These pressures do result in numerous cases of alcohol abuse, eating disorders and even sexually transmitted diseases. (Pipher P 27) However, to suggest that these are for the most part gender related issues is simply not true. Pipher's thesis is that adolescence “... has always been hard, but it’s harder now because of cultural changes in the last decade,” (Pipher P28) and concludes that “...“I found girls to be obsessed with complicated and intense relationships.” (Pipher P35)
