Toyin Adepoju has aptly described the Introduction to Igbo Medicine Essays as "superb essays" and I simply agree with him. Obododimma Oha equally asserts that "interestingly, it was a Yoruba person who sought out these articles on Igbo Traditional Religion and Culture on the web and shared them on a list serve. By so doing the Yoruba people, he contends, have beaten us (the Igbo) to it again and may start pontificating on Igbo culture for the Igbo, if Igbo people continue with this attitude of indifference to Igbo heritage” - as these essays on Igbo medicine and culture in Nigeria highlight. Furthermore, arguing along with others in the USA Africa Dialogue Series, P-J Ezeh held that "Of course, any culture - as we need to learn from these essays by Patrick Iroegbu in his [Introduction to Igbo Medicine and Culture in Nigeria] - without its autochthonous religion is like the carapace of a tortoise without the animal. And that once a religion of a people dies, the... More > death of everything follows. It will do the Igbo elite good to do like the Yoruba elite did to create a well studied and unprejudiced awareness of the immutable anthropological facts of their cultural reality through understanding what sense their endogenous medicine and other related cultural symbols and activities produce and reproduce in fortunes and misfortunes as seen in this author's ethnographic views. This book is a welcome development that will keep scholars and leaders busy for years. Effort such as this is required in a critical development arena to help policy and action with a new vision for integral understanding and therefore the blending of health care needs and ecological resources with so-called biomedical sphere.
