The author beautifully illustrates how it is possible to choose optimism even though enduring what no child should ever have to endure. It is an authentic account of resilience personified throughout childhood, adolescence, and adult life. The message the author imparts is that she is clearly focused on current and future challenges, including advocating for improved policies to assist children affected by poverty and abuse, rather than focusing on the past. Her inspirational story provides an unfortunate reminder that an ever-present smile and a positive attitude may actually be a child’s way of concealing or avoiding painful aspects of their life; therefore, it is a must-read for educators, child advocates, and those that have suffered child abuse and/or poverty. The author made the statement during adolescence to other camp members when asked to tell her story “Okay, as long as people don’t think I’m a hero. I’m not, I was just the one who got out.” I hope she reconsiders accepting... More > that title, for her story is one of more than just survival. As an adolescent, she empowered her mother to take a stand. As an adult, will be a hero to all those she empowers to strive for a better life following the reading of this book.< Less

To Dr. Rosalinda Mercado-Garza, PhD, I carefully put down your book after reading the last page, took a deep breath in, and slowly released it. With tears rolling down my face I imagined once again your life. I imagined where it all started and where you are today and I smiled. More tears began to roll down my face, but inspired now from the happiness in knowing the person who you are, the family that you've built and love, and the kindness and strength in your heart. This touching story sends an inspirational message to all children and adults living in an unsafe, unjust environment. Your courage to move forward and better your life and your surroundings gives hope and life to those feeling like they can't go on any further. You are an inspiration to many who live in poverty and those who live everyday life without hope and in fear. Thank you for sharing your story with us. I am honored to know you, proud to be considered your friend, and inspired by your story. Warm regards,... More > Francesca Newcomer< Less
