Chipinga served the huge and varied farming communities in the Eastern Border District of Rhodesia. It had manufacturing and processing enterprises including cheese, bread, tea, coffee, beef, wattle, leather, fruit procession, grapes and wines, honey and bees’ wax, research stations and veterinary care. The farm manager ordered the farm carpenter to construct me a tree house in the large fig tree. He was very skilled and obtained a stack of wooden poles and planks and began its construction. We watched fascinated and he made a superb trap door entrance. He called us over and asked our names and used a heated wire to burn our names on the trap door, Ross and Jason. We spent many a day in the tree house although we had to pass through the security gate. We even had our birthday parties in it with a nice tree house home-made birthday cake each. I am thankful to have been given the opportunity to have had a tree house built in my honour! I was truly blessed and will never forget my five years in Chipinga.
