Everybody needs shelter and a place that they call home no matter how small or basic it is. The cold, Arctic weather in the U.K. makes sleeping in a tent virtually impossible. Hence many people end up with their names down on a flat housing list, and as soon as one becomes available, they sign a legal tenancy, pay the first week’s rent and deposit, are given the keys and move in. Life in a block of flats can at first be exciting as everything is new; but the monotony or life soon sets in, and the loneliness and unfriendliness of neighbours can leave a lot to be desired. One has to make a lot of effort to be cordial and respect and consider other residents including not playing loud music, keeping the passages clear of obstructions, not throwing things out the windows, not hanging washing from the windows, picking up and disposing of one’s litter properly, driving carefully into the car park, and making life in the flat as pleasant as possible.
