Sep 24, 2016I was fortunate to be teenager living in a small town in Maine when Duane Bruce started spinning records on WTOS. He became a constant companion in my life and the songs he played were the soundtrack to it. DB helped shape my musical outlook and made me want to be a DJ. He played it. I fell in love with it. Called the station to request it. Taped it off the radio. Rinse. Wash. Repeat. In 1987, WTOS changed formats. Like many, I was crushed, but by then, Duane had firmly planted the seeds in my soul. He went to WFNX in Boston. I went to college. Flash forward almost 30 years. I still listen to many of the songs and bands Duane Bruce first introduced me to on WTOS (and have discovered so MANY more as a result of his influence. I’ve DJ-ed at 3 stations over the years. My now 7-year-old son loves everyone from David Bowie to Slayer. And then Duane Bruce comes back into my life by way of his new book “Hang the DJ”. Duane is as gifted a writer as he is a DJ. He writes with honesty, humor,... More > and heart. His stories from his WTOS days brought back a flood of memories (when he talks about playing a particular song or album for the first time on the air, I remember being in my room at home listening on my radio). His work in Boston is legendary and the stories he tells about that time are harrowing. It’s all here…the music, the bands, the passion and the struggle. It’s an AMAZING read and if you have even the slightest bit of interest in alternative music, the 80s, radio, DJ-ing, etc., you need to do yourself a favor and BUY THIS BOOK. You won’t regret it. I want to thank DB for the gift of music and love of radio he brought me all those years ago in a small town in Maine and the effect it has had on my life. This book has been the icing on the cake.< Less
Sep 22, 2016DB’s storytelling style leaves you feeling like you just spent hours with an old friend you haven’t seen in years, reminiscing about the good old days. As a former college music director and dj, everything rings true, and I am happily lost in nostalgia. Knowing that a favorite dj from Maine had made it to the greatest radio station I’d ever heard kept my eyes on Boston for years. This is the life I aspired to at that age… It’s somehow personally fulfilling to confirm that his experience was everything I thought it would be and more. If you have a sense of adventure in rock ‘n’ roll, you will love this book!
Sep 22, 2016After working with Duane at WFNX for years, you would think I would know at least half the stories - no way. This book gave me a background on Duane's life in Maine that sadly never emerged at 25 Exchange Street, Lynn. Also, there are Boston tales that completely flew under the radar, even though we were on the same air staff. Duane played a tremendous role in the history of WFNX, and here he has the time and space to tell the whole sordid deal. Of course he could have spilled the beans in the 'FNX documentary film, but you-know-who was busy hogging the camera. Am I sorry for that? No. Am I happy I laid out my hard-earned cash to read all the gritty mcdirt on Boston's epic radio wonder, WFNX? No - I am still a cheap basterd, and the bum should have thrown me a freebie. Should you buy it? Absolutely. More photos of me would warrant 5 star rating.
Sep 22, 2016I loved this book. Duane Bruce crafts colorful, entertaining anecdotes about some of the biggest names in Rock/alternate & punk music. His considerable real-world experience is not only a big piece ofBoston music history, but of National and International history as well. A "must read" for anyone who loves music, radio, and/or celebrity.
