Russell builds a fascinating character study in his debut novel about a man struggling with himself. In the spirit of writers such as Chuck Palahniuk, he builds a first person narrative that gives the reader an intimate glimpse into the daily life of the narrator. Full of slow and deliberate scenes that peel away the layers of the speaker like an onion, The Downward Spiral, is almost cinematic in its detail but provides far greater insight into the mind of the protagonist than any film could reveal. Ultimately a simple story, about character, this novella is a return to style of story telling that doesn't resort to cheap tricks and thrills but engages us through real and believable characters.

this novel is very relatable for anyone facing a personal struggle, or who has lost someone important in their lives. The main characters madness continues to grow as the novel progresses, and the first person point of view makes this madness even more fascinating. I would definitely recommend this book!
