Stilts is a book that’s written so well, it offers a great deal of enjoyment to readers of all genres. I recommend it heartily. Mr. Chessher’s text depicts one man’s personal struggle with insurmountable odds, the triumph of good over evil--and he does it in such startling fashion, his characters become totally familiar to the reader. While Stilts remains true to the classic western genre, the plot as well as the action, takes us on wild ride through the formulative years of one man’s life in the old west. Quite a few authors that write not only westerns, but other genres as well, often try to depict human emotion and fall terribly short. However, Earl Chessher is a veteran writer and is remarkably comfortable when he portrays “vignettes of life” that make us smile and some that prompt us to shed a few tears. Chessher takes us through a gamut of emotions in Stilts and yes, the book is that moving. The western genre has never lost its audience and is alive and well everywhere. I wanted... More > a good book to read and with Stilts, I not only got what I wanted…I didn’t want it to end. Keep writing stuff like this Mr. Chessher, and you’ll never want for readers.< Less

Let me begin by saying that western novels are not my typical genre. Stilts, by Earl Chessher, is actually the first western novel I've ever read, and I'm glad I did. With only 76 pages, it is a very quick read. I know some people judge a book not only by its cover, but also by its length. For those out there who think a book needs to be thick, think again. Some of the best books I've ever read, this one included, were short and to the point. This one starts out with cold-blooded action and then trails the reader along on a quest for revenge. The main character, Randy (a.k.a. Stilts), is a good guy who's overcome a lot of hardship. And I mean a lot. He's lost his parents and his legs. When the only other two people in his life are also taken from him, he sets out to hunt down the band of outlaws responsible. He's an impressive character and you can't help but root for him along the way, even as the lines between good and evil begin to blur and Stilts becomes a bit of an outlaw... More > himself. The story culminates with an extraordinary shoot out. It's the perfect ending.< Less
