This is a collection of essays and short stories accumulated during the 80's and 90's, all loosely connected via a continuous narrative. This is an introduction to a reality that few have time to see while busy with creation of their own. This is a book for intelligent adults who are not afraid of challenging ideas and who insist on the right to think for themselves. The collection is a worm's eye view of British society at the bottom. The narrative is blunt and uncompromising, takes a wry, bitter but often humorous look at many absurdities in the way we conduct our affairs and is more illuminating of humanity in its gloomlight descriptives than the clinically bright light of academic studies by Oxbridge social isolates.

"Excellent first novel." I bought this book because the title Sabbatical and the synopsis intrigued me. Some parts made me laugh - others gave me a lump in my throat. I found the emotions portrayed here very real - Ed has a great way with words. On the other hand I felt he used some obscure words that might have some people diving to find their dictionaries. Not a book for the uneducated. I hope that Ed Murfin's next book will be a humorous one as I feel that THAT is where his talent really shines.I LOVED it. Kathy Coates

"Ed Murfin's Sabbatical" In an earlier review I suggested that Mr. Murfin might include a synopsis. I note that more information about the two principals is now included - and I thoroughly enjoyed the additional extracts. I chuckled at his description of the Plymouth Brethren - and their seven thousand deadly sins. If anything, I'm more impressed than I was before. The previous set of samples did not include any about the narrator, and I'm glad to see that omission now also rectified. A three thumbs up rating is almost justified on the strengths of the preview alone, and is sure to follow reading of the complete work. For the time being, I'm content to rate it with two.
