A rainbow spattered blood clot of black-tongue humour, Invisible Foxes is a satirical thrust through modern airs and classical grotesquery. In a feeding-tube of net-work technology, Mumford’s first novel is a brewed mash of stories eating through a timely blog—a jaw-grip on reality that’s reeling past the yellow brick road, into something violent, amusing, and sarcastically bereaved.

What I like about Eddie Mumford’s debut novel, INVISIBLE FOXES: masterful dialogue, witness Vinnie/Mustache, Vinnie/Fawn, Vinnie/Dasha repartee; uncanny capture of the thought processes of variant females including the perspicacious Vinnie; vivid incisive vocabulary and sentence structure that speed up extrapolation of new meaning (“My tone was lost to me.”); on-target web-bite and science factoids lend emotional ballast to irony; the leitmotifs of bullying and Jack Layton and hurricane Irene and the Oz theme stitch the narrative keenly; Vinnie’s private blog with “corrupted” sections perfectly conveys the notion of compulsive deception in self-therapy; excellent dialect in Sonja and the Boss; engaging immersive mental and physical atmospheres with clarity of sensory detail; the salvia-smoking episode and subsequent subversive witty wordplay; character responds to narrator’s stories recursively included as titled chapters; this is a bold, surprising, scary, inviting achievement from... I didn't realize this was short stories more than anything. Eventually it all wraps together in the end as one story, but it took me a while to used to the transitions. The ending was worth the wait though. Had to say that. But I also have to say that there it should say short stories somewhere in the description.
