eBook (ePub), 152 Pages
It is June of 2010. The Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers are engaged in yet another epic and mystical NBA Finals clash. At the same time, avid Celtics fan Doug McAllister and his family are taking a 3,392-mile road trip from Chicago to Yellowstone National Park and back. As he ventures deep into the harsh, unapologetic wilderness, Doug valiantly tries to keep up with his beloved Celtics, encountering laundry-obsessed fellow travelers, unreasonably patriotic Boy Scout troops, and absurdly ancient Laker Fans along the way. Despite myriad obstacles, Doug stays true to his dedication to Boston sports, his ability to frustrate the living hell out of his wife, and his need to consume 5-hour energy drinks.

Oct 23, 2011"Traveling" is not quite what one might expect when reading the description. It's far from a woe-is-me recounting of the Celtics losing in the NBA Finals. And really, it's far from a story about camping with the family on a roadtrip. "Evil Ted" Lonergan paints an interesting picture of a rather unique individual's perspective of the trip, as viewed from the intentionally disjointed and perplexing viewpoint of retelling the affair to the ridiculous assortment of characters attending a therapy group for overcompetitive individuals. There are hallucinations, magic, questionable levels of sanity, and Larry Freaking Bird along the way to make things almost surreal but always hilarious. A quick read, but in a good way.
Oct 18, 2011One might be tempted to dismiss TRAVELING as merely the feel-sorry-for-me rantings of an obsessed Celtics basketball fan in danger of being deprived of the opportunity to hunker down with his beloved team as they battle for the NBA championship on national television. That would be a mistake. In reality E.T. (“Evil Ted”) Lonergan's hysterically funny take on sports obsession is much more complex and nuanced than that assumption would imply. The 2010 NBA finals pitting the Celtics against the Lakers plays out in Lonergan's tale as only one narrative strand among many. Others incorporate characters from a support group for folks attempting to overcome various obsessive behaviors, scenes revolving around a family vacation trip “out West” and the narrator's “need” to locate a functioning television set on which to view each series game. These strands frequently intertwine. Domestic interactions play out in the midst of a support group session, eliciting comments and critiques from the... More > participants. Comments on the action are voiced by everyone involved. We skip back and forth in time to accommodate all these various musings. Wry insights emerge along the way as the reader grows more and more aware of the narrator's willingness to go to whatever lengths are needed to accommodate his family's vacation plans without compromising his obsession with the championship series and his devotion to his favorite team. I laughed out loud many times in response to these very real struggles, the humor with which they are addressed and the easy recollections of my own personal obsessions paralleling those faced in this tale of the interplay between obligation and obsession.< Less
Oct 16, 2011This book is awesome! "Evil Ted" Lonergan weaves an engaging story about a man in search of his soul. Or at least his sanity. He captures the unique comedy of a family road trip while exposing the manic side of a devoted, if competitive, Celtics fan. Complete with a cameo of Larry Bird himself, Traveling is well-worth a read. Even Lakers fans will enjoy it!
