Elaine Zorbas's book is wonderful: educational, well written, and interesting. It's also an important addition to California's written historical record. Few know the real history of the Chinese who helped build the California we know today Reading Elaine's book, I couldn't help but notice the parallels between how the Chinese were treated and described and what is happening in our country today with Mexican immigrants seeking opportunity and a better life. So it is very timely. This story is something locals steeped in the myths of the "glorious" Gold Rush and post-Gold Rush history need to hear. Living in Amador County, I see far too much glorification of the county's post-1850s past and far too little recognition of its complex history, which included native people, Spanish conquerors, French trappers, and gold-seekers from around the world - and yes, Chinese immigrants seeking a better life. Thanks to Elaine for helping us see our own backyard in a new light.
