The Blessing Game is a forensic-free birth mystery. The novel begins on a recent Labour Day weekend when Anna Taylor, Head of the school, discovers a foundling on her front verandah. While searching for the baby’s parents as well as the thief of the new laptops, Anna and her long-time friends--witty, academic Chris and saint-like chaplain Mary--run the school and its church with humor, efficiency and compassion. A troubled journalist, a charming businessman, a drunken neighbor, an idealistic prefect, an ineffective Assistant Head and an imperious lady are but a few of the characters. Anna is the sixth-generation Taylor to live in the elegant house on her farm. The farm’s businesses are now her school, her cousin’s riding stable and another cousin’s winery. A nicely compelling story written with a real understanding of the inner workings and politics of an independent school. I felt like I was on staff and was watching things unfold around me: the lives of students, fellow employees and all of the complexities and interactions therein. The plot developed my attention, but I particularly liked everything else that was unfolding in the background. A good read.

The excitement - and the stress - of everyday life in and around Bench Road School continues from the first page to the last. We see how the main character Anna is able to cope with this. By a love for her family, her friends and her faith, by the restorative powers of her favourite music and the tranquillity of the Niagara countryside, she is able to focus on the care of the people in her life - in more ways than one !

This compelling page turner draws the reader into a vividly portrayed boarding school in the scenic Niagara region. The story is presented in a thoughtful manner while the suspenseful plot maintains the reader's interest. The idea of a birth mystery instead of a murder mystery is inspired. I'd love to have a glass of wine or two with Anna.
