Did you ever wonder at what it was like to visit a speakeasy? The captivating allure of flappers with their fringe; the sweet sounds of jazz emanating from darkened clubs that held onto their secrets; the double lives of people who would never have considered themselves “criminals”. In her book, The Silver Tea Room, Elizabeth Richmond has captured the feel and the sway of this period of fun and gaiety and a new breed of woman. Also the much darker side of the criminal elements of prohibition and the corruption of public officials and its’ pull for those whose job it was to uphold the law and enforce it. And a love story that binds it all together. The Silver Tea Room, so titled from the place where the story unfolds, is at its' heart a tale of love and the help of relatives and friends to reunite lovers lost to each other. The story begins in the aforementioned “room”. You are allowed to peer in and see the evenings festivities. Through the atmosphere Elizabeth so accurately creates... More > you can smell the city as you walk towards the speakeasy, you can hear the muted tones of the instruments as you are allowed entrance, you can feel the electricity of men and women mixing together, the smell of cigars wafting up to greet you as you sink into the hidden space together with her and you may find yourself wanting to ask the barkeep for something for yourself. Moving a little slowly at first, you will find yourself drawn into the world she so adeptly adorns with memorable characters and moments. She tugs at your heart as she creates characters that come to life then reveals the pains of Marise and Julio and their enduring love. Ironic twists await you as you explore this lush place and discover all of its secrets. The book moves along at a fairly rapid pace making it a piece that becomes harder to put down as you progress through the story. In her first outing, Ms. Richmond has admirably created a piece of roaring twenties fiction that will leave you wanting to explore it again over and over. The Silver Tea Room delivers as a fictional love story set in the 1920’s. Certainly you will find yourself drawn into it to explore its dark secrets together with the author. Readers of all ages will find something to enjoy here – whether in the love story she creates, or in rollicking about with her as you journey towards its’ culmination, or getting lost in the depths of the places she creates.< Less
