Struggling with a decision, big or small? Let me recommend this book to you. To all coaches, therapists and people who are deliberating, pondering or struggling with a decision Ellen Quick has written her first book for the non-therapist and it is excellent beyond that. “How do you know when you know?” is full of practical guidelines, relevant information, and examples written in an easy to read and engaging style. For those of us familiar with Ellen Quick this is no surprise. To many developing and seasoned marriage and family therapists, and solution-focused therapists (me included), Ellen Quick is a well-respected and revered giant in the field. Her brilliance extends to psychotherapy, coaching, writing and training. Quick is the author of three professional books that are essential reading for therapists: Doing What Works in Brief Therapy; Solution-Focused Anxiety Management; and Core Competencies in the Solution-Focused and Strategic Therapies. Into her first book for a general... More > audience ‘How do you know when you know?’ Quick has poured in her considerable experience, knowledge and wisdom providing the reader with an abundance of tools, suggestions and material to reflect on that will make “knowing” easier in decision-making. Quick provides the reader with a description of the background and concepts of the Solution-Focused Approach and the set of attitudes and methods that define this strength-based therapy, and sets the tone for the rest of the book. If knowledge is power then the reader is the recipient of a plethora of opportunities to explore and learn from. In this highly useful book Ellen Quick has taken the subject of decision-making and she has sliced it as thinly as possible, deconstructing it for the reader in many different ways, with stories, information and different ways of approaching the process of making a decision. I am walking away with the nugget proposed by Ruth Chang, ‘when you choose A over B, make yourself the kind of person for whom A is absolutely the right fit.’ (p. 123) I also appreciate how Quick both introduces to the reader and remains consistently faithful to the assumptions and tenets of the Solution-Focused Approach. I will be recommending this book to my clients, colleagues and students. Dina Bednar, MA, RMFT, RP Co-Director of the SFBT Certificate Program OISE, University of Toronto< Less

What a gift this book is for someone like me who has "struggled" with decision making for my entire life. I say "struggled" because this book has allowed me to appreciate that I have always had my own individual process for making decisions and to let myself off the hook for not making decisions like other people do. So the first gift of Ms. Quick's book is learning to shine a light on my own process so that I can be aware of it instead of judging it. The second gift of this book is learning more about the solution focused approach. As someone who is new to solution focus coaching, I learned how to apply the approach to decision making - something that I believe is completely new. Ms. Quick gives tons of different decision making methods (one was utterly new to me and a complete revelation coming from someone who has always used "defensive pessimism" but never known what I was doing). She also included so many stories of different people making decisions... More > on various parts of their lives. This was enlightening. My only tiny criticism of the book was that the examples might be perceived as repetitious to some, but others may feel it helps them. But as she says, use the book as it benefits you. So i started skipping some of the examples that weren't as helpful to me personally. For those deciding if they should purchase this book, I would say that, unlike other books whose authors tout having "the way" to make decisions in your life (what a load of crap) - the combination of solution focus and decision making shows you that you have your own way of making decisions and it should be respected. That's not to say you won't learn how to improve your decision making abilities - you absolutely will! It's just to say that if you've been mildly successful in your life - you already know how to make good decisions. Ms. Quick helps to reveal your process to you and add to your abilities. An amazing combination!< Less
