I love this book. "Sick Simple Heart" is musician, artist, writer, and photographer Emme Packer's first published book. The book contains three sections. The first section is a collection of poems written by Emme. Admittedly, I've never been a big fan of poetry in the past. I always considered it the place rhymers went to rhyme, and in doing so, the poems weren't very profound or didn't make much sense, even when you thought about them. After reading Emme's poetry, however, she surprised me. Many of her poems don't even rhyme, and most of them are very profound when you ponder what she's trying to say. She's taking her thoughts and putting them out in a condensed, non-story type way, making it art. Emme's mind is interesting, and she's no doubt a very intelligent person. The second section is a selected collection of lyrics to her music. At the current moment this review is being written (April 19, 2010), all the lyrics in this book are for songs she has not yet released on... More > any albums (the already released albums have lyric books included with them). She has, however, performed a few of these songs live, and I have been fortunate enough to hear a few (Illinois, You're Already, and Leaves). The lyrics are beautiful, and it makes me wish to hear the rest of these songs, because I imagine they'd be as beautiful as the lyrics. The last section is a collection of various journal entries from Emme. This is my favorite section because all of Emme's thoughts and pleas are written plainly for anyone to read. It affected me greatly. She attempts (and in my humble opinion, succeeds) to tell people what kind of a person she is, and why, in some cases. Some of the most touching moments of the book are her journal entries about understanding her physical illness. Wondering why she was "blessed" with it, and describing to those who don't understand it just what it's like living with it, and pleading for those truly blessed with healthy bodies to appreciate it and be thankful for it. Being thankful is another theme of the book. Realizing what you have when others don't have it. It's amazing. In this book, Emme claims to have a "restless mind" and to be an "over-analyzing girl." For this book, that's a very good thing. Her over-analyzing, restless mind is very interesting. Even the title of the book is art in itself, which I believe describes her. I also love the cover art of the book. Very unique and brilliant. I recommend this book to everyone.< Less
