"Review of As in a Mirror, by Emrys Tyler" I liked this book. The plotting is especially strong, I think. Tyler does a nice job of maintaining interest in the story line while simultaneously switching back and forth between different characters' perspectives. I think the overall theme (in the sense of what's really going on with the story) is good, too. I did see a decent amount of the climax of the plot coming, but enough of it surprised me that it remained interesting. I also appreciated the biblical/Christian allusions. I think Tyler does a nice job with that, actually: The Christianity in the book, especially at the end, will be clear to anyone used to picking out those kinds of things, but the story can also be enjoyed purely on its own terms. That's a tricky thing to do, as the large amount of garbage Christian fiction out there attests. He also did a nice job editing. For a work of this size I saw surprisingly few grammar, spelling, and typo errors. I have trouble... More > writing a review without making at least a few criticisms. Here they are: The characterization isn't bad, but it could be stronger. Also, there are a few places where too much of the action is explained instead of being left for the reader to put together. That's always a fine line, though: Too much explanation and the story is boring; too little and the story is just confusing. Overall, I enjoyed the book. I thought it was as good as some of the fantasy novels I've read from mainstream publishers. Certainly the themes in the book are deeper than what you get in a typical fantasy novel. I'd read another one of his books.< Less
