"just pretend I'm handsome: new poems 2007" This volume was written during the peak of my libational consumption, as well as the peak of my frustration with women and whatever relationships I managed to eek into (few and far between). Not that I'm not handsome, but American culture says look like Tom Cruise or be damned. This being a thread, there are still many poems of differing content, as is the case with all my books. If you like bittersweet chocolate, you might like bittersweet poetry--and sometimes just bitter! I'd say Bukowski is my main influence; by reading much Bukowski I gathered some of his style, but mainly saw in his practice how heart and soul (if a given poet has that in him, but then, if not, would you even call said poet a poet after all?) is best communicated--simply and strongly. Most poetry of the past 60+ years has been highly unreadable--I could never read an entire book of poems by the hoity toity snobs of advance intellectual garbage slinging, I... More > mean, if it's not arrogant nonsensicals it's highly politicized, as though it were held high on a pedestal for other 'poets' to admire and fawn over. Not Bukowski. Hank had spirit and soul and conveyed his inspirations in a palatable manner. So too do I try to write: the volumes I've sold locally appease both professor and dingy bar crowd, to everyone inbetween. I intended this as well as it coming out naturally thus. I hope, as I show respect to all people and living beings, that my work is also respectful, readable, and enjoyable. just pretend I'm handsome: new poems 2007 shows what the world can do to a soul, and sometimes we're better off not getting what we want, because when we do, if for the wrong mission, we're bound to be let down. Let's hope we all can be strong enough not to misguide ourselves and to reach out and pull the 'help' string to stop our violently fast falling into the abyss, which has a bottom, you know.< Less
