Good and evil. Right and wrong. Law and sin. All of these words can be found in the ancient Germanic languages and all of them are still used today. But what did they originally mean? In We Are Our Deeds, these words are traced back to their original meanings and significances, revealing the sophisticated system of ethics possessed by the ancient Germanic tribes.
Unhappily, for history, none of this wisdom ever found its way into any direct literary tradition, which the ancient Germanics did not possess; instead, it is all to be discovered in a close analytical consideration of what we know of their ideas and folkways, the words they used and how they used them. In We Are Our Deeds, Eric Wódening examines the words, customs and laws of the ancient Germanic tribes, with an eye to the more accurate reconstruction from such materials of the true elder pre-Christian heathen ethic. Having a difficult time getting through this book, not for the content, but because the editing and proofreading are so bad. I ordered the hardcover and the pages are falling out, I should have waited for the paperback but I was anxious to get this. I am in the publishing business, if my company ever put out a product so lacking in quality, I would be sorely disappointed. I will get past the cosmetics though because I know the content is worth reading.
'We are our deeds' by Eric Wodening has long been out of print. This has been a shame as this book is often cited, and I agree, as a foundational text for the modern practitioner of the Pre-Christian Religions of the Germanic Peoples. When a man or woman reads this book they will see language and it's ties to our culture and religion in a whole new light. A light the ancients saw things by. Do not fear though, this is not a dry book on archaic dusty words. It is a vibrant and readable book that will make you wish you read it years ago or if you already read it, you shall be glad to have added another copy. Hopefully you were able to get the hardcover copy. Better folk than myself can give a better review and if you search the web, even lightly, you will see this book mentioned often and with respect. The book itself, the paper and binding, as well as the clarity of print, is additionally quite nice. In a few years, the binding won't crack or have leaves falling out. The paper is of a... More > good quality and the formatting is even and centered. It is worth every penny in content and quality. I would recommend buying a copy for yourself and an additional one as a gift. I am full of joy that White Marsh was able to work on and complete the republishing of 'We are our deeds'. cheers Ron Boardman< Less
