This is a well-developed character study on young people who go through trials that many of us are familiar with secondhand but that many ignore or minimize because they don't understand. Alder invites readers to step into the shoes of those who might be labeled as "goth" kids, to experience the psychological downward spiral but with enough perspective to be able to feel compassion for Asher and his friends. Readers can see what hell a mind can create by beginning with believing just a few lies about oneself. When an amateur detective links a type of mad scientist with a clairvoyant mental patient through a family too familiar with tragedy, a circle of meaning appears that the reader has been yearning for throughout the whole novel. Though Asher is tormented by one who wants to take advantage of his weaknesses, he finally discovers that it is up to him to take the path of hope and healing. This book is positioned to become a treasure to young readers and a springboard to... More > discourse that eliminates the dispair too prevalent in real life.< Less
