As an exiled (by choice) South African, “Thisses and Thats” were a real treat for me to read — a return to a childhood almost forgotten. My only complaint is that there were not more stories in this collection. How the writer’s deft language brought it all back to me: the hot red sand between my toes, the unique dialect and humour of the local farmworkers, the tea-drinking “anties”, the wide open veld, the oppressive heat and dust, the ‘manne’ in the hotel bar – all of these came flooding back to me in the very vivid dialogue of these short, captivating stories. There is no way I can begin to do justice to this collection, except to urge the writer to collect all his South African stories in an anthology.
