As an exiled (by choice) South African, “Thisses and Thats” were a real treat for me to read — a return to a childhood almost forgotten. My only complaint is that there were not more stories in this collection. How the writer’s deft language brought it all back to me: the hot red sand between my toes, the unique dialect and humour of the local farmworkers, the tea-drinking “anties”, the wide open veld, the oppressive heat and dust, the ‘manne’ in the hotel bar – all of these came flooding back to me in the very vivid dialogue of these short, captivating stories. There is no way I can begin to do justice to this collection, except to urge the writer to collect all his South African stories in an anthology. Local publishers would be ill advised to ignore such a talent. As a professional English-Afrikaans translator and someone who grew up in the farming environment, Errol Collen has the truly rare gift of capturing the dialect of the local Afrikaans-English community - a globally unique...
