As an exiled (by choice) South African, “Thisses and Thats” were a real treat for me to read—a return to a childhood almost forgotten. My only complaint is that there were not more stories in this collection. How the writer’s deft language brought it all back to me in an instant, as if it were yesterday! The hot red sand between my toes, the unique dialect and humour of the local farmworkers, the tea-drinking “anties”, the wide open veld, the oppressive heat and dust, the ‘manne’ in the hotel bar – all of these came flooding back to me in the very vivid dialogue of these short, captivating stories. There is no way I can begin to do justice to this collection, except to urge the writer to collect all his stories in an Africana anthology. Local publishers would be ill advised to ignore such a talent. As a professional English-Afrikaans translator and someone who grew up in the farming environment, Errol Collen has the true gift for capturing the dialect of the local Afrikaner-English... More > community, which is a globally unique one and ought be preserved for linguists –and future generations of South Africans of all origins. South Africa has long been in need of another Bosman. The other stories in the collection demonstrate the writer's skills at short-story writing --and could well make up an anthology of a different genre. Every one held my attention to the very last line. However, I strongly feel that his talents of capturing the English-Afrikaner mix, lifestyle, characteristics and humour are worthy of a much wider readership.< Less
