The trial of the century did not involve a celebrity or well known public figure. The trial of the century centered around a man with character and integrity unmatched by most men. When the American Legion attacked the union hall in Centralia, Washington on November 19, 1919, it was the first time in history the union men fought back, leaving four soldiers dead. Innocent and unarmed, union man Eugene Barnett stood in the window of the hotel next door, a witness who could not be allowed to talk. "We know you had nothing to do with this," the prosecutor said, "but unless you keep your mouth shut, we're gonna send you up." Barnett had an extraordinary life through a turbulent time in our nation's history. Because of his willingness to sacrifice his life and freedom, every American has been touched by his contributions to our nation's history. Laws, beliefs and lives were transformed by his strength in doing what he believed was right -- to tell the truth. This is the... More > true story of Eugene Barnett.< Less

Mar 13, 2011Ripples of a Lie offers history in the form of a very good read. First it’s the story of a family making its way 100 years ago: through hard work, love and sacrifice; coal mines, company stores and unionization; then needless tragedy and cover-up, despite clear evidence. Footnotes appear on the page. No need to flip to the back. I read right through Ripples the first time, so engrossed for long stretches that I kept forgetting that central characters are my ancestors. Now I’m going at the book again, with highlighter and pen in hand, to flag details. I treasure this engrossing piece of history and appreciate the love and effort that went into creating it.
Feb 22, 2011Everybody should read this book. In light of the present economy, struggles over civil rights, unions, and the freedoms we have, it is a timely reminder of what our parents and grandparents lived through to give us these rights and how fragile they are. What happened to Eugene Barnett could happen to anyone.
Feb 7, 2011A book written with the actual facts about the horrendous miscarriage of justice against Eugene Barnett who was a man of honesty and integrity and spent years in jail for a crime he did not commit. This is a good read, a very interesting and touching biography of Mr. Barnett’s life from an early age until his death. It has taken years and years but finally the truth is being told in this book written by his daughter who compiled information from her father plus papers, letters and photos from family members of the other prisoners involved in the events surrounding the Centralia trial. It is a very heart warming story of an amazing man. I enjoyed reading it immensely.
Jan 29, 2011This book has been long over due. It's a historic account of one man journey to tell the truth. Ripples is written in story form making it an easy read. This is a story that needs to be told and the author did a wonderful job telling a story that could not be told by any other. The author used letters from the prisoner's family members to help the story come alive and pictures to help the reader develop a visual understanding of the life of Eugene. This is a wonderful story that now can never been forgotten.
