Let's be honest. This book is not a substitute for a face to face conversation with an attorney regarding your specific situation. But for what it is, it is pretty darn near perfect. I've now learned a number of things that I thought I knew but didn't and a lot of things that I should have known. Anyone who is familiar with gun ownership in NJ knows that the laws are a complicated web and one bad move can get you caught up and destroy your entire life. There are also exemptions and exceptions to the laws, but it is always best to get an attorney's advice on how to proceed. Nappen's book is pretty much that. It is THE authority on how to navigate the NJ gun law maze and how to stay out of trouble, out of jail and keep your guns. Along with the book I would heartily recommend a membership in a NJ rifle or pistol club such as the ANJRPC. ANJRPC provides an attorney service where you can call one of their attorneys and get gun law questions answered and even get referred to trusted... More > attorneys who know NJ gun law inside out. Membership also gives you protection when transporting firearms to and from places of target practice which is just one of the things you'll learn in the book. The only regret you'll probably have buying this book is living in NJ in the first place, especially when you read the back cover. The price? Not cheap but I think it's reasonable, especially considering that Lulu runs specials from time to time.< Less
I think this is an excellent book. Clear, concise and addressing all of the pertinent issues for the laymen gun owner. It is a real eye opener. In trying to further my own gun ownership knowledge I had bookmarked the NJ statutes and tried to interpret them. As easy as it seems I was never sure I got it right. This book confirmed many of my interpretations but also clarified others. Also, it is very difficult to navigate the state's online resources. This book is laid out to answer the most relevant questions and issues for gun ownership and handling in NJ, making it unnecessary to pore over the statutes without direction. If you still have questions all of the author's remarks cite the applicable statute so you can easily go directly to the law to answer any questions you have. 2 thumbs up!
The guide is a great reference; it is a clear concise starting point for understanding your rights in a very complex anti-gun jurisdiction. Does it make sense to cite certain relevant sections of the law in the back of the book? Absolutely! The cites to the law in the back of the book allow you to make the connection to the statutory language for a better understanding of the subject. Knowing how to avoid the pitfalls is important and this Guide helps.
I disagree 110% with the previous review.. Based on that logic, all you need to do is read Guyton's Physiology and you are a Doctor.. This book compiles into a brilliantly organized and easy to read reference everything you need to know to be in compliance with current laws, which if you live in NJ and own or plan to own or use a firearm.. should be your first concern... Well worth the price-- Thanks Mr. Nappen-
A basic guide to New Jersey Gun Law. This 385 page paperback contains 184 pages that simply reproduce New Jersey statues and administrative regulations and 65 pages from BATF website. Both the New Jersey Statues, Administrative regulations and BATF information are available for free on the internet and a weblink to these sources would more than suffice. Although the paperback does complile them. The balance of this work is printed on 8 1/2"x 11" large size pages with many pages with text on 1/2 of the page only. The same information could be presented in a work 1/2 the size. Many topics are covered in a cusory fashion and the book lacks a comprehensive bibliography that the reader can consult for further information. The book does not focus on key legal issues that are now before the federal court, with the exception of a few quotes from last terms Heller decision in the U.S. Supreme Court. However, that may go beyond the intention of the authors. Unlike some other State Gun... More > Law Guides which are updated via internet linking, this option is not present. On a positive note, the paperback does cover the basic issues that would be of concern to a New Jersey gun owner. It also contains valuable Loopholes Πtfalls, of value to the reader.< Less
