Abuse is a word thrown about somewhat loosely, but the army, for all its glorification and rah, rah spirit, is evidently an abusive environment. M. O. S. Spitvalve takes us from the ridiculousness of basic training through the petty little games the more senior cadre play, through real life situations and dangers and, in some cases, out the other side, unceremoniously dumped back on the sidewalks of civilian life. Although I found the book immensely entertaining, the anti-climatic ending left me feeling cheated. Not as a reader, but as a citizen of the country and a human being. Then again, listening to all the bruhaha over returning vets from Iraq and Afghanistan, it appears not to have changed a whit. If the author is to be believed, and I see no reason not to do so.
