The myths and lies of youth become the legend of life. This is the story of one of those lives, from the sordid streets of NYC to a millionaire studded neighborhood in Dallas, and most places in between. Before starting this book, the author went around asking how many murderers people knew. He apparently, an exception to the general public's experience.

***** Imagine, if you will, a life story amazingly close in tone to yours, but without any of the substance resembling it. That was the feeling I got with this piece. Perhaps it is because of my age, but I doubt it. I think the bull people spread through their children is universal. They present their self-deceptions as truth to the unsuspecting youngsters. Santa claus, easter bunny, god, angels, devils the list is long. Inexhaustable. Why would anyone do that to their own or any child simply to control him? Would actual parenting suffice instead? Why do we not try telling the children the honest facts of the matter? The tone of this piece is subdued, and admirably so. Once a child finds out he has been lied to, his options are limited. One is fury. Anger. The phrase angry young man is extant for a reason. Someone or something has informed the individual he has been played for a dope, he has been duped, and it was all in the name of protecting society from his mind. A terrible... More > discovery. A debilitating discovery. And yet the piece deals not so much with the deceptions as one man's entrance into the very mind society tried so hard to bury. It is as much a story of the mind as anything else, and by escorting us through the world of the writer, I think he does said world a service. There are no mysteries, just ignorance. I forget who said that, but it is a truism. This book removes much of that ignorance. Bravo.< Less
