Within the last few years, India has continued on a path towards banking reforms after several decades of heavy state involvement. The pace of reform in India has been much faster compared to the reform in other comparable economies, such as China. The process of liberalisation has attracted new entrants into the banking sector from both within and outside the nation. Thus, the banking sector in India now has banks that are owned by the public, the old private sector banks and the new private sector banks. It is, therefore, appropriate to examine what ownership influences, if any, can be observed on the performance of banks in India. This study tries to take a look at the cost and efficiency components of bank performance for various ownership types that are to be found in the banking sector in India.
