The division of Korea was the result of the presence of the Russian and American armed forces in two separate parts of the Korean Peninsula when Japan surrendered at the end of the Second World War. However, the Korean War started when North Korea felt that it could reunite the Korean Peninsula by force and invaded the South with backing from its Chinese and Russian communist allies. It was only after the United States of America had involved itself in the war that it was possible for the South Koreans to reassert their right to self-determination. However, the Korean War in which the North had sent 66,000 tanks to invade the South was to see Chinese forces fighting against the Americans with more than half a million dead only on the Chinese side. This essay presents a discussion about a strategy for the resolution of the North Korean problem to bring about lasting peace that will be best for the world.
