Health Economics in Funding Healthcare: HIV Prevention vs. Treatment

The HIV / AIDS epidemic has proven to be catastrophic all around the world, but the Sub – Saharan region of Africa has been the worst hit with the highest number of HIV infected persons and AID related deaths. Because of ignorance, sexual promiscuity and an inclination not to use safe sex methods, the spread of the HIV / AIDS infection has been very rapid and pronounced, devastating many a rural community and seriously impacting the economies of many Sub – Saharan countries. This paper takes a look at the HIV / AIDS situation in Sub – Saharan Africa and considers the merits of various intervention options that are available.
