The Evolution of United States Policy with Respect to China since the time of Nixon’s Visit

ByFarrukh Khan

This study attempts to present an analysis of United States foreign policy towards People’s Republic of China since President Nixon’s visit to this country. The policy of détente that had been set up by President Nixon and Mr. Henry Kissinger not only made it possible for America to disengage itself from a costly war in Vietnam, but this policy also made it possible to stabilize the Asia – Pacific region. It will appear that the confrontation between the communist ideology and that of capitalist egalitarianism has been better settled through dialogue and engagement rather than through the force of arms. However, progress has not always been smooth and a difference in the thinking prevailing within the two nations has sometimes proven itself to be difficult to resolve to a common view.
