This little book is a treasure: the perfect gift to indulge yourself or a friend. The collaboration between painter and poet is masterful and not to be missed. Thumbing through the pages gives one a first glimpse at the magical and mysterious quality of these paintings, created by a luminosity that shines through each scene. As one looks more closely, Floy Zittin’s esthetic compositions come alive through gnarly, twisted tree trunks and a layering of greenery and grasses reminiscent of Asian brush painting. The bird subjects are executed with the technical skill of a nature illustrator and one gets the sense the artist has spent much time in these settings. The color palette is evocative and in good part seems to set the emotional tone for the piece. What is especially intriguing is how the accomplished poet, Patricia J. Machmiller, guides us through these paintings with her imagination into other dimensions. She picks up on the emotional tone of each piece and through her haiku... More > enhances the depth of feeling; sometimes even leads us to a surprise. True to being a traditional haiku poet, she calls our attention to the different seasons by responding to the color palette and feeling of each painting and compliments it with an appropriate kigo (seasonal reference word) in each of her poems. Her poems are beautifully crafted. The calligraphy is so carefully executed its hard to believe its been done by hand. This little gem is an absolute delight for the senses. I highly recommend it.< Less

This book is one of my touchstones. It is easy to hold, beautifully presented, and each page moves me into a deeper journey of awareness. Through the melding of haiku poems, paintings of birds, and calligraphy, it consoles and inspires simultaneously. Near the closure, care has been taken with a characters' page which names the birds in order of appearance -- reminiscent of a list poem that opens a door to another timeless adventure. A must for one's library and a sensitive gift for others.
