Oct 15, 2009"Cholesterol & The French Paradox" The author - a naturopath and clinical nutritionist - spent a number of years researching cholesterol motivated by the fact that his own cholesterol was more than double the norm. The book is comprehensive and explains a number of aspects about cholesterol that are not widely known. For example, most people believe that cholesterol is bad, and this book explains the good side of cholesterol, as one of the most fundamental molecules in the human body and the precursor molecule for many essential metabolic functions. To put it simply, with no cholesterol we would be dead. The author’s research is very detailed and also introduces the reader to other credible sources such as scientists’ and health professionals who have investigated cholesterol, pointing to interesting scientific papers and websites that you can visit on this subject. This book explains why cholesterol does not stick to the arteries and why it does not clog arteries.... More > Cholesterols role is to repair weakened arteries, and protect damaged arteries from bursting which might otherwise cause a fatal stroke. This book ‘drives a truck’ through the cholesterol myth, and in fact, leaves the reader with a lot of respect for cholesterol as a substance, and how it keeps people healthy and saves lives. One thing I learned from this book is that the brain is mostly fat, in fact it is 70% fat and 8% pure cholesterol, and explains why people taking cholesterol-lowering drugs may develop brain problems, including early Alzheimer-like symptoms that are irreversible. This means difficulty in thinking through daily problems, or remembering something from 10 minutes earlier. The case examples of business executive that lost their jobs because of cognitive mental decline are very compelling reading. The author also looks at the question of heart disease, how to avoid it, and explains in very clear terms what a naturopath and nutritionist would recommend to avoid heart disease. This in itself will save you time and money as it is a literal ‘how to’ book. Some people would think this book is about the French Paradox because of the title, but that is not what I found. I think the authors aim was to use the French Paradox to help explain why the French get very little heart disease. This makes sense as France was voted number #1 by the World Health Organisation in terms of healthcare, versus the USA healthcare system which is 30th on the global list. The author explains the primary causes of heart disease including high homocysteine levels, high LpA levels etc and how to get tested to see if you are at risk. By comparison, cholesterol is considered a relatively low risk factor for heart disease and he explains why. The author exposes in a very generous manner, the truth behind cholesterol-lowering drugs and why this $40 billion dollar global business is the cash cow of the drug companies. He asks the obvious question “How can the # 1 ands #2 top selling drugs today be for cholesterol which is not even a disease, and why are the top two selling drugs not for real diseases?” This book is a valuable read for health professionals including practicing doctors who would like another view of cholesterol, and how best to treat patients with elevated cholesterol. Its excellent reading for laypeople or medically trained professionals, seeking an in-depth understanding about how to treat elevated cholesterol conditions. Money well spent.< Less
