"Night Train" Although this book is stated to be a conversation between three people on a train, it is much more for it consists of a number of stories told by John to justify his position. And the best thing about it is this main character, John. He is an extremely sympathetic person, kind, with a strong belief system, yet fallible too. The reader trusts John and is compelled to follow his story. John is joined by many likeable and interesting secondary characters and strong stories movingly told. Many chapters deserve special mention. “The Elder” offers a fresh look at Northern Irish paramilitaries, an intriguing character and entertaining plot. “The Coachyard” is a simple story that touches the heart; “King Henry” is an extremely well plotted story that readers won’t soon forget (although I would have liked more description of Henry and more chances to hear his voice.) In “Molly”, the main character’s story is all too believable and grounded by references to Dublin.... More > “Annie” is a lovely character – in fact I would have preferred she was introduced earlier and utilized more. And the central story – John’s early life in London (the loneliness, the frugality), his slow turning toward religion, his courtship and marriage to Lillian, Lillian’s death and John’s raising Lillian’s daughter – is quite believable and will resonate with readers. I think readers will enjoy this book. It has a feeling of authenticity to it – it wouldn’t surprise me to learn that parts of it are based on true stories. The people in the book are people whose stories, I feel, should be told more often They are people without wealth or influence who have made mistakes and are trying to create better futures for themselves and others. They are ordinary people. I’m glad I got the chance to read about them. Galway Writers Centre< Less
