The Battle of Antietam was the bloodiest day in American History. Fought on the calm fall day of September 17, 1862, at Sharpsburg, Maryland, Antietam embodied human battle at its highest level. Soldiers perceived the chance to inflict as much damage as possible on their enemies in order to destroy the others' army. Northern and Southern regiments mixed into a cauldron of battlefield fire, containing the deadly ingredience of the Minie Ball, artillery case, solid and canister shot, and close angle fighting with bayonets and swords. Regiments literally disintegrated into the infamous Cornfield where casualties rose to percentages unheard of in war. A Blinding Blaze of Lightning takes the reader from causes of the Civil War right up to the Battle of Antietam and all of the surrounding events and circumstancesleading to what many have termed the real turing point battle in the Civil War.
