An interesting and intimate look at the US bombing campaign over Germany during the last six months of WWII from the view of a Jules Lasner from New York. Lasner was a Lieutenant and navigator in a B-17 Flying Fortress belonging to the 602nd Bombardment Squadron, 398th Bomb Group in the 8th Air Force and participated in 27 bombing raids over Germany from late autumn 1944 until the war's end. The book is biographical account of Lasner's experiences, both as a navigator but also as an American Jew, encountering anti-antisemitism in the USAAF, both in the States and when deployed in England. The book also goes into great detail when it comes to the 27 bombing missions over Germany, especially when it comes to successes and losses when encountering the German Air Defenses in the form of heavy Flak (AA) defenses around and in German cities and factory areas as well as the attacks by the weakened but still potentially lethal Jagdfliegeres of the Luftwaffe who throwed all that could take off... More > against the B-17 formations, including the Me 262 Jet Fighter. The Author has made many in depth interviews wit Jules Lasner which are the base of this book. Highly recommended reading...< Less
