Gail Dennehy’s Flow Blue is a lyrical, beautifully written look at the heartbreak, poverty, tenacity and love of five generations of Irish women. Starting in Inishmaan, Ireland and finishing in Weymouth, Massachusetts the history of this family is presented through intimate looks into the lives of their women. The remarkable thing is that all of it – the love, generosity, cruelty, and bitterness of these women is presented without judgment. One gets the sense that if you could meet any one of the women in this book they would stare you down without apology, “This is who I am.” Gail Dennehy’s talent as a writer shines through in that she is able to bypass decades in each woman’s life with barely a mention, and by giving us detailed glimpses into a few well-chosen days or months from their lives, capture them beautifully. We are all products of the generations gone before us and the work Gail Dennehy has done here, to understand where she has come from, can help us all understand...
