Price: $8.40
Tears of the Willow is the story of Bluesky and Adam, created out of desperate scientific experiments in a hidden northern stronghold to continue a dying human race. The "Newborns" carry the seed for healthy, natural procreation plus the spiritual insight and mental powers to lift mankind to a higher level. The creators of these hybrid children would sterilize and destroy their abilities, seeing the maturing teenagers as a threat to their powerful hold over all of their closed enclave known as the Western Simulate. The story ranges from the glittering pomp of the Western Simulate to the rat-infested holes in the ground of the hidden Deform camps; from the heroic citizens of Duboice surviving against all odds in the wilderness to the Sanctuary called Brights where Barton bitterly opposes Bluesky and her younger siblings.

"Hope Amidst Confusion?" Tears of the Willow although targeted at a teen audience was thoroughly enjoyed by this "arrested" adult. I like a sci-fi book that literally drops one right into the scenario without tons of preamble. Any devotee of this genre does not need gobs of superfluous information as they have no doubt read many books depicting a bleak future fraught with the usual struggles found in any good page-turner. Gale Peterson depicts a society where children have become the most precious asset, oftentimes used (abused) to bolster the value system of an autocratic society hellbent on maintaining isolation and thus being able to maintain power. Strong characters emerge here and unlike many other scifi books I have read the strongest characters are not necessarily of the male gender. That alone is refreshing to this feisty gal. When I got about halfway thru the book I was already thinking to myself SEQUEL ANYBODY? That is a good sign for I did not want... More > the adventure to end. Peterson's message could be interpreted utilising any racial group today to make his point - that being that there is no hope for humanity unless we dump the egos/baggage that saddle us and work together in the midst of adversity. Although set in a very depressing scenario Peterson's message of hope resonates - in that the human race could still "evolve" is a positive message indeed. Cleverly crafted utilising the best of literary techniques that any writer worth their salt would never dismiss as cliched or trite, Peterson guides us literally and figuratively and this reader was pleased in that she could not predict the outcomes. So the question remains Mr. Peterson? Sequel - please? Space alien invasions optional.< Less
