The Tethered Goat: A Collection of Short Stories from Gary Bonn
Paperback, 276 Pages
Prints in 3-5 business days
Opening a book by Gary Bonn is like no other reading experience. It can be like a roller-coaster ride, like leaving planetary orbit, like drowning - you’re never quite sure where he will take you. Even more fascinating, you’re never sure quite how he will do it. You’ll find stories here that are so grimly realistic they are emotionally harrowing. But you’ll also go beyond realism to other worlds, crystal worlds, underwater worlds, strange arenas where men fight in the dust, weird islands where another kind of order prevails, magical worlds where everything that you thought was real is challenged. Laugh; cry; feel; think: Bonn is one of the exceptional writers who can make you do all of those at once, whose writing style makes it difficult at times to breathe because you’re transported and they don’t breathe the same air in that story. If there is a cutting edge of storytelling, Bonn is ahead of it, sharpening the blade.

Apr 13, 2019Well, here we go... I have just finished the very last story in Gary Bonn's fantastic collection of short stories, The Tethered Goat. Five stars are not enough to reflect how truly wonderful these stories are. Throughout reading I've been thinking about what I would say when it came to a review and I've had a long time to think as this it not a book you can read quickly. Each and every story requires reflection after reading it, each one challenging your sense of reality, humanity or self. There are times where I've had to leave the book alone for several days purely because the reaction to the story I have previously read has left me so raw. Time must be taken to savour each story, short or long. Gary doesn't pull his punches in any of the stories, in fact there are times when it felt as though the characters leapt off the page and smacked me round the face. I've laughed and cried at them, with them and for them. Although every story has its merits, there are few stand out... More > favourites. The opening piece, Still Alive, is an emotional roller coaster in two short pages. Separate Hells is...well, I can't put that one into words but if you want a story to punch you in the guts and make you ugly cry then that's the one, right there! My favourite above all though was Can You No' Hear Them? The story read like music and appealed to the Celt in me. The words were like a conjuring and it took me a long time after I'd finished reading to come back to reality. I could say a lot more about this collection if I could find the right words but I don't think I can't do it justice. All I will say is buy it, read it and then I challenge you to describe it better than I can. Gary Bonn - congratulations on such an amazing collection. It was truly an experience.< Less
Apr 9, 2019like to think I've always known about Gary Bonn, the writer, but that's not true, but I like to think it. The first story of his I read was "Yes," but I can't recall when that was, but it seems like years ago, because since then I've tried to read every story he's written. I devoured his short story collection Through Another's Eyes and tonight I finished his newest collection The Tethered Goat. Just as it should be there are differences between this collection and Through Our Eyes. The Tethered Goat has all the hallmarks of Gary Bonn's writing, primarily that it's brilliant, but in this collection stories like "Separate Hells" and "The Tethered Goat" are stories that go really deep. into the human psyche in a profound way; not that there weren't stories in Through Another's Eyes that didn't do that, but either it's me or Gary, but there's a different kind of writing maturity going on here. Maybe that's the overall amazement for me in reading the stories... More > in The Tethered Goat. The lines between the story and me as the reader became blurred. That is only accomplished by a writer as tremendous as he is. I make it no secret that he's my favorite short story writer. He should be yours too.< Less
