Ridgeley and Carpendale, West Virginia From 1750: A History - Hardcover

ByGary Clites

Special hardcover edition of the local history book available only from Lulu. The small town of Ridgeley, West Virginia played a key role in the early history of our nation. The creation of Fort Ohio by the Ohio Company in what is now Ridgeley was a major step in the early Western expansion of the colonies. It was here that George Washington took his first military command and launched the attack that started the French and Indian War. In that conflict, General Edward Braddock used Fort Ohio in part to mount his ill-fated attack on Fort Duquesne in the Battle of the Monongahela. Later, the town dealt with floods, wars, and grew into a cohesive blue collar community. Important people from American history involved in the history of this small town include Washington, Braddock, George Mercer, Joseph Chapline, George Mason, Daniel Boone, Daniel Morgan, James McCubbin Lingan, and many more. Includes notations, bibliography, 38 illustrations.
