"Great Eyes, by L. Landwehr" In his book Taking Notice: Paying Attention/ How a Traveler Sees, photographer/writer/traveler Gary Dwyer’s beautiful photographs take travel images to a higher level, and his commentaries on the individual shots are fascinating and enlightening. He has been almost everywhere, and always with eyes that see what many others of us miss. Dwyer writes that he has “never striven for what Cartier-Bresson called the ‘decisive moment,’ but rather for something constant and elemental. Buildings, and especially their doors and windows, tell us stories, events. They have been and are the literal and metaphoric passages in the lives of local people. Silence, irony, fatigue, and joy are some of the messages that the details of a building can send, but only if we are able to take the time to look.” Dwyer definitely takes the time to look. His book includes stunning portrait and landscape photos, but his photos of the built environment are perhaps the most... More > eloquent. It’s a rare pleasure to see the world through such observant and perceptive eyes.< Less
