Jul 31, 2017I learned of this book in April and ordered it right away. Having worked with both authors I was excited to read it. This book was especially delightful to me as I "fought" the Battle of Midway many times while stationed at the Naval War College. It was exciting to me to read about this battle once again. The romance just added to the enjoyment. I was aggravated, appalled and thrilled all at the same time. I can't wait for the pre-quell. Great job Gary and Maria, you really captured my attention and did a great service in telling this story.
May 2, 2017I am a lover of romance novels. They remove me from my time and place to enjoy someone else's life and perhaps see my own life from a different perspective. "The Last Magical Year" did just that. I was there during the war and waited in agony with the heroine of this story. So this book was a real bonus for me; it was not only romance but also filled with WWII history. Despite the sometimes detailed and accurate history, "The Last Magical Year" was an easy read.....perfect for a rainy afternoon or to take on vacation. I will probably reread the book just to make sure I did not miss any good stuff the first time around. You will not regret the time spend reading this book!!
Apr 27, 2017I just finished reading The Last MagicalYear!! Congratulations on an amazing undertaking! This book made me laugh, and cry, and yell out loud a few times! I felt as if I was sitting beside the pilot in the midst of attacks! I could feel the adrenaline pulsing! I could so much relate to the story of young lovers, felt their joy, sorrow , anticipation, and even a broken promise! With two son in laws in the Navy, I could relate to a lot of the anxieties, and also, the pride of our country! I enjoyed reading about, and learning about the Puerto Rican culture. I did not know what jibaros was, and now I do! I could even relate to the character from Buffalo, where I was born and raised! He attended Canisius College, with which I am very, very familiar! When I started reading this book,I was a little nervous thinking I wouldn't be able to follow the various aircraft and Navy "lingo". But once I got into the book,I found myself reading very slowly, because I didn't want it to end!... More > Great job, Maria and Gary. I am anxiously awaiting the prequel!!!< Less
Apr 26, 2017I just finished reading "The Last Magical Year." In every chapter I felt transported to that time and place. I could see the events of WWII developing through the words I read and I felt the heart-breaking moments as the story unfolded before my eyes. I felt for the characters and their desperation, especially during the war scenes. Loved the story. Waiting with anticipation the prequel: "Weatherill Farm."
Apr 15, 2017I just finished reading the book and every chapter is a gift full of emotion and history. While reading it, I felt the same feelings of main characters. The narrative is so vivid, I lived through their anger, impotence, emotion, desperation, and the profound feelings of the first love … and the awfulness of war. The story describes the daily routines of sailors in military installations, the beauty of the mountains in Puerto Rico and its Spanish customs, as well as the historical details of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. It is a universe of understanding of a specific place and time, were you feel transported to that micro cosmos. But this message of love and anguish of impending war, is applicable to all times, countries and cultures. What I did not like was the way Jack’s mom was first introduced. Jack, my Spaniard! Thank you again for this gift, so full of emotion; not a single page is boring. Congratulations! Great work!
