Price: $7.00
A collection of nearly 60 new hymns of the Faith, presented here with commentary and music (a combination of traditional tunes and new melodies). The hymns are arranged in four categories: 1) Psalm Settings, Scriptural Paraphrases and Biblical Meditations; 2) Hymns for the Church Year; 3) Songs of Prayer and Lament, and 4) Songs of Faith, Hope and Love. . . . . "The great truths of biblical faith catch fire when we sing them. This collection mines these deep truths and does so in ways that are fresh, creative, and moving. When Christian faith is at its best, it brings forth its hymn-writers and what we have here is the best of our generation." - David F. Wells, Distinguished Senior Research Professor, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. . . . . Gary Parrett is Professor of Educational Ministries and Worship at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Julie Tennent is a music teacher, accompanist, church organist and composer.

I have used this book as a supplemental resource for my congregation for over five years. It is well worth every penny of its low price! The hymn "We Will Not Cease the Gospel to Proclaim" is alone worth the $7. That hymn is a 16-verse summary of the Epistle to the Romans, and works very well as a sung response to a Scripture reading or sermon even if you just pick 2 or 3 verses to sing at one time. The Scripture reference notes are very thorough, making these songs and hymns useful resources for preachers, also, who may want to quote the song in a sermon to connect the faith sung to the faith preached. Some of the lyrics can feel somewhat verbose, and a few of the tunes are a bit "bouncy" for a congregation only used to hymns (The Decalogue comes to mind). Perhaps best of all, many of the songs and hymns in this book come with already-familiar tunes (or even familiar alternate tunes for songs with original melodies), so the congregation doesn't have to spend any... More > time or energy learning how to sing them. Not that I dislike my church's hymnal, but this book has been such a blessing to me and my congregation. I highly recommend it to any pastor or musician.< Less
