The Arch Deceiver is a superb thriller. A unique and suspenseful blending of espionage, intrigue, revenge and political ambition. The plot is mesmerizing. Right out of today’s headlines. The story moves at a fast, consistent, captivating pace. It begins with a bombing in Ottawa, followed by covert operations in Northern Ireland, Hawaii and then back to Canada’s West Coast where a G7 Conference is now a target. The author describes locales with uncanny insight and detail. The characters are vivid and real. Villains or saints, each has strengths, weaknesses, hatreds, hopes. I felt as though they were speaking to me as well as each other. Webb’s knowledge of intelligence services and tradecraft adds to the plot’s ingenuity, suspense and veracity. The developments in third, and final, section are especially gripping. A compelling and engrossing read.

A fast paced international spy story. It is graphic and suitable for young adults or older teenage boys. I think my grandsons will love it. It reads like a fast paced action computer game.

This engrossing story about a multi-ethnic team of intelligence agents tracking down an equally diverse group of insurgents, gangsters and war criminals is a great read. I especially enjoyed the unique, often colourful, characters and how each contributes to the plot. The comprehensive, vivid descriptions of the book’s many locales are also impressive. Webb’s first work of fiction is a winner. I give it a five star rating.

By Firefighterveteran and Canadian Army Veteran W.O.(ret) S. Pennington Having known the author for a number of years it is no surprise that Gord is able to deliver a fast past modern thriller theat sets the reader on edge from the first page to the last. A well written account of what at "first blush" could be fiction or, perhaps not. Considering the times we are in now here in Canada and, the future of terrorism as it is developing, one could consider Gord's writing as a blue print for what may become more novels in a series. If you are a Clancey fan then this book is for you. From a Canadian perspective it set the hair on the back of my head on end with the artful unfolding story telling. A solid read from a new author on the Canadian scene. Well done Gord!
