I have been a recreational diver in New Zealand since 1973 and the pursuit of lost objects on the ocean floor has been my passion. This includes old bottles and discarded shipping line china pieces in a local harbour. For 15 years, I asked a friend with a large collection of shipping company pieces, whether he'd seen a certain 'USSCo crest' in any of the collections he knew about. The answer was always - no! I had found pieces that I came to realise that collectors were most probably unaware of. I laid out all the broken pieces I'd found and through researching the marks on the tops and bases, I have been able to establish the chronology of the crests and flags of the USSCo of New Zealand. Combining provenance from early shipwrecks of Union Co vessels, the story is told. Interesting to note is that the crest/flag designs changed 4 times in the first 11 years, then once more in the 125 year history of the USSCo. I saw many museum and personal collections for the images in this book.
