Geoff provides us with a concise process to plan small projects, subtitling the book ‘What You Need to Do Before You Start’. The book totals 48 pages including the title page (pdf version). While Geoff presents ‘many of the principles and accepted practices’ of project management he states that the book is ‘intentionally light on theory and heavy on basics which should enable you to be successful’. He is quite clear that his book is not about building the Sydney Opera House, it is about ‘small projects’. Nevertheless, the process can be applied to a wide range of projects. All that varies is the size of the response to the sixteen questions he presents with guidance for their solution. The questions range from ‘Who else will be doing the project?’ to ‘What are the known risks and issues, and how will I address them?’ The first ten questions apply to simpler projects with the additional six applicable to more complex endeavours. Geoff identifies potential pitfalls and solutions at each... More > stage of the process. The book includes practical advice and forms that can be used to compile the project plan and indeed the forms can be downloaded from his website. One handy idea is to use sticky notes for each activity, enabling an easy way to align sequential and concurrent activities, a very practical critical path analysis. “How to Plan Small Projects’ is an effective practical book. Its small size enables rapid application. I recommend it to anyone seeking to improve their project planning skills, and to managers seeking improvement and consistency from staff. Indeed, the book could form the basis of an organisational project planning policy. Peter Black Business Lifestyle Pty Ltd< Less

Reads well. Content is well-structured, and would provide a valuable reference for the target audience, who have little or no project management experience.
