Jack Mawgan, a successful homicide detective, abandons his police career to become a paramedic but his instincts for solving violent crime prove impossible to leave behind. In his first case in this new role a millionaire businessman from Glasgow is assassinated at his home in Cornwall. The killer’s trail leads to an aristocratic crook and his henchman who both have much blood on their hands. Jack attends the murder scene in his new role as ambulance technician but it leads to a life threatening situation for him, his family and his friends that is only resolved after more murder and mayhem. (This story is built around real places, real people and real events, but the plot and characters in the book are entirely fictional.)

A very readable story - clearly based on a lot of personal experience and thorough research. The crime-thriller genre is so full of material that i was pleasantly surprised to find a plot that was actually quite original. If i had to level any criticism at all then it would be that there is, perhaps, a tendency towards over-detail in some passages, particularly the author's "pet" subjects. However, it may be that i am only noticing this because of my knowledge of Geoff - if i did not know the author then these things may well not have been so noticeable. All in all, it's a commendable first novel and well worth a read. I think that most of us have said, at one time or another, "I think i've got a book in me". Well Geoff is one of the very few who has actually proved that he has - I look forward to Jack's next outing!

For a first novel, not bad at all! Being harsh the dialogue gets a bit stilted (how many times do you throw the other person's name into a conversation?) but that is my only real issue. Set in an area I remember from many years ago there is a good narrative which allows the reader to become immersed in the Cornish countryside with some characters who are set to be revisited in sequels or even prequels. Thanks, Geoff, for a good read!
